La ville / The city

C’est une grande ville au bord de la mer. Elle se trouve dans un pays où il y a un grand désert. Ce pays s’appelle les Emirats Arabes Unis, et il a une frontière avec Oman.
La ville a été construite au milieu du désert et aussi sur la mer. Il y a des avancées qui ont été construites sur la mer. Certaines ont des formes de palmiers. Ils ont même construit des îles pour représenter tous les pays du monde, mais pour les voir il aurait fallu prendre un hélicoptère !
La ville est assez récente. Elle s’est vraiment développée à partir des années 1970. Il y avait alors environ 60 000 habitants. En 2018, il y en avait 3 millions !

It’s a big city at the seaside. It’s in a country where there is a big desert. This country is called the United Arab Emirates, and it has a border with Oman.
The city has been built in the middle of the desert and also over the sea. There are artificial islands in the middle of the sea, some have palm trees shapes. They even built islands to represent all the countries of the world, but to see them you would have had to take a helicopter!
The city is fairly new. It really get developed by the 70’s. There were about 60 000 inhabitants at that time. In 2018, there were 3 millions!

Les habitants / Inhabitants

On reconnaît les gens des Emirats Arabes Unis par leurs tenues : les hommes ont de grandes tenues blanches et sur la tête une sorte de foulard tenu par un anneau. Les femmes ont des tenues noires jusqu’aux chevilles. Elles ont des voiles noirs pour cacher leur tête.
Les gens des Emirats Arabes Unis, avec leurs tenues traditionnelles, ne sont pas très nombreux dans les rues. Ils ne représentent qu’environ 10% des habitants.
Les autres habitants sont soit des touristes soit des gens qui viennent habiter à Dubaï pour travailler. Ces gens sont habillés normalement ou parfois avec des kurtas (sortes de longues tuniques avec pantalon assortis) comme les travailleurs étrangers à Oman.

We can identify people of the United Arab Emirates by their outfits: men have large white outfits and on their heads a sort of scarf held by a large ring. Women have black outfits up to the ankles. They have black veils to hide their head.
There are not many people from the United Arab Emirates dressed within the traditional clothes across the streets. They represent only about 10% of the inhabitants.
The other inhabitants are either tourists or people who come to work and live in Dubaï. These people are dressed normally or sometimes wear kurtas (kind of long tunic with matching pants) as foreign workers in Oman.

Les tours / Towers

La plus haute tour du monde se trouve à Dubai, elle s’appelle la Burj Khalifa. Dedans il y a des hôtels, des appartements et des bureaux. Elle mesure 828 m de haut !

The tallest tower in the world is in Dubai, it is called the Burj Khalifa. Inside there are hotels, apartments and offices. It measures 828 m high!

Dans la ville il y a plein de tours ; elles ont des formes différentes et parfois bizarres : en tourbillon, toutes droites, … Il y en a plein qui sont en train d’être construites.
Il y en a même une qui va être encore plus haute que la Burj Khalifa !

In the city there are lots of towers; they have various shapes and sometimes strange shapes: vortex-like, straight… There are a lot of them that are under construction. There is one that will be even higher than the Burj Khalifa!

J’ai bien aimé les tours, la vue quand on est monté tout en haut d’un immeuble, et le métro aérien.
I liked the towers, the view when we went to the top of a building, and the skytrain.
